The Agape orphanage (which is named the "Agape Child Care and Support Centre") is located
in
Durban,
South Africa
and currently serves 98 children
that have been orphaned by the AIDS epidemic.
The Agape Project was
established in
June 2000; since that time, the Denver Project Staff has worked in partnership with many different
entities to secure the land where the Centre is located, including the erection of the current
facilities.
The Denver Project Director for the Agape Project is
Reverend Ronald A. Wooding.
Because of the comprehensive composition of the Agape Child Care and Support Center volunteer staff,
all of the children's medical, nutritional and educational needs are addressed. The Agape volunteer
staff includes two doctors, a social worker, several qualified nurses and nursing assistants, educators,
consultation from HIV nutrition specialist and counseling services.
All of the Centre's current funding needs are categorized as follows:
|
- building fund,
- clothing,
- overhead expenses / general fund, and
- mission travel

January 4, 2005 is the day the Centre's administration building, which included the girl's dormitory,
was destroyed by fire. According to Zodwa Mgadi, Centre Director, an electrician identified that a
faulty electrical outlet may have been the cause of this tragedy. Despite this tragic loss for the
Centre, the spirit of the children and staff has prevailed.
The fire has created the funding needs listed above. The building fund and clothing for the children
are the most urgent needs. The overhead expenses/general fund contributions will support the needs
of the children and staff during this period and displacement until the reconstruction is completed.
The mission travel contributions support essential Denver-based Agape Project staff to travel once
or twice annually to the Centre.
